As spring approaches and the snow eventually begins to recede. Once again we enjoy the greenery that nature has provided us. It’s time to get the fly rod out in eager anticipation of another season of long, warm, lazy days spent at your favourite fishing hole.

 

It’s also the time that new, would be anglers are anticipating taking up the sport of fly-fishing. Conveniently there are many experts out there in cyberspace, with advice and articles on what are considered the best rods, reels and line etc. Many tackle shops are owned by, avid, experienced and highly skilled anglers. Who will provide the new comer with the much sought after advice on getting started in the sport.

 

The technology in rods, reels, flies and lines, has advanced by leaps and bounds, in the past 20 years or so. However, no matter how technologically advanced or expensive your fishing equipment is. It is only as good as the knot’s you tie! The knot may be the weak link in the chain when the fish strike.

 

Tying strong and reliable knots will enhance your chances of actually landing that fish. There are many books and resources available on how to tie knots, how to splice lines and which knot to use in various situations. I cannot emphasize enough the need to learn as much as you can about knot tying. It should be noted too, that practicing the tying of a variety of knots, greatly increases your chances for success.

 

Some anglers prefer to tie their knots the old fashioned way by hand. There is nothing wrong with that, as they say whatever floats your boat (if you’ll pardon the pun). If that isn’t for you there are a variety of tying tools you can get from virtually any angling store. These tools are very good especially for beginners. Knot tying tools can also be a real asset to anyone suffering from arthritis, or other debilitating condition.

Knot tying tools in many cases will allow you to tie stronger knots faster than you could by hand. Tying stronger knots increases your success rate. The least time spent tying knots, means you spend more time fishing and that’s what it’s all about.

Timelines

• The year 1768 or 1770 represents the birth of bass fishing sports.

• William Shakespeare Jr. materializes the production of a level wind device and secured its patent on 1897.

• The William J. Jamison Co introduced the overly ornamented Shannon Twin Spinner in 1915 and was improved to create today’s spinner baits.

• In 1932, President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted the creation of The Tennessee Valley Authority and encouraged the creation and building of

numerous dams. These dams were later used as fisheries for different species of bass.

• Five years later, DuPont Company filed patent for a nylon fishing net, this was later developed into nylon monofilament fishing line. Still in use

today. With some changes it stays straight and lasts quite a long time with cleaning and care.

• In the year 1992 Larry Nixon, the famous fisherman in the history of bass fishing won M total earnings for this sport on this year. Today we have

bass tournaments all over the US and winnings of 0,000 to ,000,000 are common.

Types of Bass Fish

Several fish species that are being caught in bass fishing are:

• Micropterus psalmodies (Lacepede) – Largemouth Bass

• Micropterus dolomieui – Smallmouth bass

• Micropterus punctatus – Kentucky Bass

Just a note of reference, Australian Bass are different from the above North American Bass variants although most share similar features. Perhaps, the most

robust success of Bass Fishing was in the 1950s. Due to the development of modern fishing equipment, from bass boats, rods, lines, lures and various fishing

gears.

Electronic gear was incorporated among the host of equipment bass fishers used at that time. Reels of different types, which function in hauling and

hoisting, were also created. Statistics show that the audience base of this sport is increasing and that more and more people are getting interested in it

compared to tennis and golf.

Fly fishing for bass is a popular sport as well.

A good fiberglass or bamboo rod is required and comes in various sizes. The most used size is a 9 foot rod. The rod is longer than normal rods because the

rod is used to cast the heavier line.Rods will come in one, two or three piece units. Many fishermen prefer a two piece rod as it is easier to transport.

The type of fly line you use will depend on the rod you select. Look on the rod handle for the type of line to use with this rod. The reel of a fly rod is

very different than a spin casting rod and will hold less line. This is because the line is much thicker. With a spin rod the lure is pulling the line but

with a fly rod the line is pulling the lure.Most bass fly fishers will want to use a Up-Locking with extension butt type rod. Your fishing store will know

what your asking for.

Another important item for the fly fisher is a good fishing vest.You want as many pockets as you can get and large enough to hold your lure boxes and other

items. Also make sure there is a felt or wool fly holder to stick extra fly lures to. This makes it easy to change lures when needed.

Chest or hip waders are also a good idea when bass fly fishing. You will be able to wade the river and streams and get right on a bass while in the water.

Remember bass like to hide and strike their prey.

A good pair of wading shoes or boot will help too. Find some with good soles of leather, felt or non slippery texture. I used to use rubber soled boots but

they were slippery on moss covered rocks in West Virginia, I now have felt glued to the bottoms and find this works well.

When bass fly fishing do not be worried about not catching any bass, it maybe trout time…So fish for trout. They are fun to catch and just as tasty. Get

History

From references it seems likely that fishing with a fly rod the way we know it today started between 1790 and 1845. Many bamboo and wood species were used as a building material before and during that period but bamboo soon became the popular and preferred material to use. It is believed that in 1846 Samuel Phillipe, a gunsmith from Easton, Pennsylvania made the first 6 strips designed tip from Calcutta Cane and that his son, Solon, built the first complete hexagonal rod from Calcutta cane in 1859.[citation needed]. Although that assertion has come under fire recently, with the publication of Split & Glued By Vincent C. Marinaro (2007). The two authors, Bill Harms and Tom Whittle, dispute Samuel Phillipe as the first to use six strip design to build bamboo rods. According to their research Charles Murphy and others began building six-strip bamboo rods at least five years earlier.

As bamboo popularity increased, the H.L. Leonard rod company started making machinery to produce cane/ bamboo fly rods. The first fly fishing rods were made from ash and lancewood, but H.L. Leonard started to make complete bamboo rods exclusively in 1874.

Square or Quadrate rods were the first rods Leonard made because his belief was that these performed much better but he eventually started making 6 strip or hexagonal rods because of commercial reasons. At that time good quality cane was hard to find. What was available was often full of scorch marks and insect damage. For this reason it was easier to acquire six strips of good quality cane than 4 wider strips for the Quadrate rod. The hexagonal version was easier to produce and soon became the standard. Bill Edwards, Sam Carlson and Ebenezer Green produced Quadrate rods and others even made bamboo rods which had pentagonal and octagonal cross-sections.

Bamboo soon became the preferred material for all fishing rods with Tonkin cane being prized above other species. This continued to 1950 when a trade embargo was imposed on Chinese goods. Due to the resultant shortage of quality bamboo and the concurrent development of synthetic fibers the fabrication of bamboo rods nearly stopped. By the time the embargo ended in the early seventies only a handful of craftsmen were still making bamboo rods. The main reason for bamboo rods regaining their popularity was a result of Everett Garrison together with Hoagy Carmichael publishing bamboo rod building ecrets in their book A Masters guide to building a bamboo fly rod.

Bamboo rods are somewhat susceptible to damage and warpage if stored incorrectly. The varnish finish can nick or become checked from too much sunlight over the years or too much heat. Breakage of the bamboo rod tips by car doors, power windows, and screen doors is notorious. The bamboo rod cane is also known to snap at the ferrule if too much heavy line is thrown in the air with too much force. Despite all the care and handling caution required of these natural fiber sporting goods, they are still valued by many anglers today, because of the way they cast. Many hold that there is nothing that casts a trout fly line like a quality-made Tonkin cane bamboo fly rod. Engineers have dedicated decades of research into experimenting with resins, fiberglass, carbon fiber, boron filaments, etc. in the quest to replicate the line-throwing qualities of the bamboo fly rod — they have gotten close, but not exactly the same.

Bamboo rods produce a smooth, fluid backcast which provides its own ‘dampening’ effect at the end of the backcast; the forward cast accelerates the line throw through the air with the same ‘dampening’ effect at the beginning of the cast and then, again, at the end of the cast as the caster lays the line out over the target water — so smooth, so precise in its placement. The synthetics can produce a somewhat similar powerful backcast and forward cast, but they lack the subtle ‘dampening’ effect consistently produced by the bamboo rod in the hands of a skilled caster. And, quality bamboo fly rods and their rod tubes were made by highly skilled craftsmen using the best quality canes, reel seats, nickel silver-plated fittings and cork, and these rods look great even after decades of use if stored correctly. Bamboo rod reel seats match up well to all modern reels with no modifications, so no special requirements are needed to use a modern reel and line with bamboo rods.

Purists will even mount an antique reel on a cane rod and use braided silk lines with dressing, like many decades in the past. It connects them to fly fishing as it was once done; hopefully for decades to come as these ‘ultimate fly fishing tools’ are preserved and passed on to new generations of sportsmen. The best quality bamboo fly rods can be found among the following 20th century classic makers: Garrison, Jim Payne, E. F. Payne (the father), H. L. Leonard, E. C. Powell, Hardy Bros., Heddon, Thomas & Thomas, Orvis (Wes Jordan and Battenkill models), F. E. Thomas, Edwards, Goodwin-Granger, Phillipson, Winston, and Paul Young; for the lesser, but more affordable, quality classic rod look to makers Varney and Montague, and Wright & McGill, South Bend and J.C. Higgins also made useful, though not truly collectible quality, bamboo rods in their day. Excellent books on the subject of bamboo rods and makers are A. J. Campbell’s Classic and Antique Flyfishing Tackle and Ernest Schwiebert’s indispensable multiple volume treatise Trout.

The art of perfect casting is one of the significant skills when fly fishing is concerned. It requires synchronized and gradual movements. It assists in thinking of every movement, be it back cast or the forward cast. There are divisions of three steps. At the outset, it is loading, then the second step is the momentum of projection, and lastly, it is the pause. It takes more than a lot of mere practice to be proficient with this art of casting in the area of fly fishing.

Several natures of casts exist in fly fishing. Among them, the common ones include the false cast, basic cast, reverse and side casts, double haul cast and roll cast.

Basic Cast

The basic cast, in fly fishing is supposed to be the easiest cast. It is just casting the line back, straight and then directly forward. A newcomer into the hobby of fly fishing must master this basic cast before approaching on to several other techniques. Using a line of short length to begin with would be helpful if one is new to the hobby of fly fishing. This would assist you to have enough control about the line especially when you are practicing gentle and short movements.

False cast

The basic cast varies to become a false cast. This again consists of the similar forward and backward movements like the basic cast. It is immediately followed by yet another set of almost the same movements. The line of the Fly essentially travels forwards and backward repeatedly ensuring no touch of the water. Precise timing usually required in fly fishing is built perfect when the false cast is practiced.

Reverse and side casts

When the wind creates the problem, the reverse and side casts are often used. Even when there are obstacles making other casts difficult, these casts are used.

Roll cast

When the fishermen find themselves with their backs to such obstacles like a wall of lush vegetation or some high river bank, the roll cast is used. Often is such circumstances, a basic cast is never possible. A good length of line should be let out in front of you or the best way would be letting the current one take a small distance. The rod would be loaded with the drag of water up on the line. You could then cast ahead without waiting for the execution of the back cast.

Double Haul cast

When this cast is applied in fly fishing, you would be able to cast a longer line than what the basic cast could do. To have this done, you need a faster line speed. Often it requires making larger casting movements, loading rod before the forward cast, and applying more strength. Both the hands of the fisherman should work independently when implementing this cast.

The above mentioned casts of five different natures are the most basic ones. There exist several other varieties of casting which include the parachute cast, the mend cast and the S-Cast.

The most fundamental physical skill required in fly fishing is but the casting. It needs practice just like every other skill. The purpose here is placing the fly precisely where you expect it to be. Delicacy and accuracy in presentation is significant when fly fishing is concerned. Mastering the fundamentals of fly casting initially would make it easier to get to the challenging and difficult casts.
